Clubfoot

What is Clubfoot?

Clubfoot is a foot deformity that is present at birth which can affect one or both feet. It is technically known as Congenital Talipes Equino Varus (CTEV). Clubfoot can occur on its own or in association with other conditions like Arthrogryposis, Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy.

It is not caused by witchcraft, any action or inaction of either parent. In fact the actual cause of the deformity is not known. It is not the fault of the parents or anyone else that the child’s feet turn inwards. The deformity can vary from mild to severe in appearance, but the good news is that it can be treated.

Approximately 1 in 800 children is born with clubfoot worldwide. If left untreated, a child learns to start walking on the sides or top of their feet, this is very painful. Treatment of this condition is cheapest and most effective by use of the Ponseti Method.

Zimbabwe has been successfully providing treatment to many children across the country. The simplicity of the method and the accessibility of treatment material has made it a preffered treatment option. Look at this informative video inspiration as you start the treatment journey.
