Our Stories

samantha is 10!!!

Firstly, we want to thank God for giving us this opportunity of thanking those who made our journey easy. Our daughter was born with clubfoot in 2011 and she started treatment when she was 4 months old. On our first clinic visit at Parirenyatwa, we were shocked to see that there were a lot of kids with the same problem. The Pare team was profoundly helpful and managed to achieve good results for our daughter. We saw great change.
Sometimes, the journey was rough because society does not know that clubfoot is treated using plaster casts. People would shout saying I was a reckless mother, because they assumed I had injured my child. Only perseverance has taken us this far. Samantha is now 10yrs old and in Grade 5 this year.
Our thanks go to ZSCP, Parirenyatwa staff and above all to the almighty God.

Bandile Gumede

Bandile Gumede comes from Mzola 55 in Lupane district (about 200km from Bulawayo). He stays with both parents and 5 other siblings. His nearest school is 3km away and since he had difficulties walking, his mother used to carry him on her back to and from school. Bandile then started treatment at St Luke’s hospital and was reffered to Mpilo Central Hospital.

On his first visit to the Mpilo clubfoot clinic, Bandile walked barefoot on the outer side of his feet and the muscles on his legs looked smaller. His wish was to be able walk to school, run, climb and put on shoes like other children

After 15 weeks of management using the Ponseti method, Bandile’s feet were corrected and a home program for muscle stretching and strengthening was initiated. His mother had this to say, “It was a very long journey I almost gave up but I am grateful for the patience and encouragement. Today my son is putting on shoes and walking normally”.

Believe

I gave birth to my child and noticed that he had clubfoot and was unable to stand on his feet. I then went to United Bulawayo Hospital and got help, now my son can stand and even walk – something I never thought would be possible. I would like to advise mothers with children affected by clubfoot to take their children for treatment and not be discouraged. Do not assume that your children are disabled, clubfoot can be treated.

Ellen

Ellens’ mother from Gwanda says
I started to come to the clubfoot clinic on the 15th of February when my child was 6 weeks old. I arrived and received all the help they gave to my child. They started treating her and since that time, the feet have changed. They are now different from how they looked at the start and I believe my child is responding to the help. I grasped all I was taught and what I saw at the clinic therefore developed trust that my child will be treated. The plasters are free and I am not paying any cent. I am thankful for the clinic and also the aunties (Ponseti Guides), who help if we are having problems in our communities.
Thank you.
